Is moss and mould treatment safe around children, pets and plants?
The straight answer
Keep people and pets off a treated area until the surface is completely dry. Once it is dry, the area can be used normally.
That is the rule, and it is the whole rule. It is not complicated, but it does need following.
The concentrate versus the spray
These are two different things and it is worth separating them.
In the bottle, the commercial concentrate is classified corrosive — skin corrosion 1B, serious eye damage 1, signal word DANGER. It is handled with eye protection and gloves, and kept away from children entirely. EPA approval HSR002526.
In the tank at 1:10, it is a fraction of that strength. That is what goes onto the surface, and once it has dried, the area is back in normal use.
Planting and waterways
Keep runoff away from ponds, waterways and sensitive planting. On a site with garden beds against a treated wall or path, wet the planting down before you start and again afterwards, and do not spray in wind that will carry it.
This is the part worth taking seriously. A path next to a pond needs a plan before you start, not after.
Schools, villages and public areas
The practical approach on a public site is to treat a zone, cone it off until dry, then move on. Drying time depends on the day — a still, dry day will see a path dry within a few hours.
Schools and councils ask for the safety data sheet routinely, and it is published at a permanent link so the copy you file is always the current one: app.purplestrike.co.nz/docs/purple-strike-sds-2025.pdf.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe for pets?
Keep pets off the treated area until it is completely dry. Once dry, the area can be used normally. The concentrate in the bottle must be kept away from animals.
Is it safe for children?
Same rule — keep children off until the surface is dry, then it can be used normally.
Will it kill my plants?
Keep runoff away from garden beds, planting and waterways. Wet sensitive planting down before and after spraying, and do not spray in wind.
Is it safe near a pond or stream?
Keep it away from ponds and waterways. If a treated surface drains towards water, plan the job around that before you start.
Can I get a safety data sheet?
Yes, it is published at app.purplestrike.co.nz/docs/purple-strike-sds-2025.pdf. EPA approval HSR002526.
